Carpet Weaving

A refined world of art where history, craftsmanship, and creativity come together

Refined Uzbek Carpet Weaving

Immerse yourself in the world of refined Uzbek carpet weaving – an art where history, craftsmanship, and creativity come together! In the 19th–20th centuries, Uzbekistan became a center for producing magnificent carpets with intricate patterns, high-quality materials, and advanced dyeing techniques.

Inspired by Persian and Central Asian traditions, these carpets are cultural heritage masterpieces and can be found in museums around the world.

Bukhara – the Center of Central Asian Carpet Weaving

The cities of Kokand, Andijan, Samarkand, and ancient Bukhara have long been regarded as major centers of carpet weaving. In the early 20th century, Bukhara was a hub of carpet trade in Central Asia, and even today, the name “Bukhara” is associated with luxurious silk carpets woven with incredible precision.

“In recent years, master artisan Makhfuzabonu Narzullaeva has breathed new life into the ancient art of Bukhara silk carpet weaving.”

In her workshop in Gijduvan, she not only creates unique carpets but also teaches the secrets of this centuries-old craft to a new generation of masters.

A Path Beginning in Youth

Learning carpet weaving traditionally started at a young age. In traditional Uzbek culture, girls began spinning threads at the age of 7–9. In their teenage years, under the guidance of masters, they gradually learned the craft and began weaving.

By the age of 20–25, they became experienced artisans, and by 30, they reached the level of master craftsmen.

Today, this heritage lives on in Gijduvan, where Makhfuzabonu Narzullaeva and her talented students continue to create magnificent silk carpets. Each piece reflects devotion to the craft and a harmony between ancient traditions and modern compositions.

Beauty in Every Knot

The creation of a silk carpet is the result of meticulous, love-filled work. Did you know that each square centimeter of a carpet contains between 36 and 96 knots?

Imagine this: for a 60×100 cm carpet, a master spends 4–5 months and ties around 216,000 knots by hand. For a larger 220×150 cm carpet, it takes over a year and approximately 1,188,000 knots. The result is not just a carpet – it is a true masterpiece.

Silk carpets are known for their durability and beauty, and their value continues to grow over time. Carpets made in the Gijduvan workshop have gained international recognition and have even been acknowledged by the presidents of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
